The daughter of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello has declared that her interest in contesting for the governorship election in Ogun State come 2027 is to become the first elected female governor of the State.
The former lawmaker made this disclosure while speaking with newsmen at the All Progressives Congress, APC, National Secretariat, Abuja on Monday.
Obasanjo-Bello, a former member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said she was at the APC National Secretariat to visit the National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda and to acquaint herself with its leadership.
The former Ogun Commissioner of Health said she joined the APC out of personal conviction because of the belief she had in it.
Obasanjo-Bello explained that she was back to active politics after being away for long, because the people of Ogun asked for her return.
She said, “I made an informed decision to choose Apc. And the reason I chose the party is personal to me. It has nothing to do with my father, the former president.
“He will vote for me, I am sure, but other than that, he is not part of my movement. He is not anything other than he will vote in the State, and hopefully I will be his governor.
“As a card-carrying member of the APC, I have also put myself in the ring to be nominated by the party as its Ogun governorship candidate.
“I m sure that not only will we succeed in getting the nomination, we’ll also succeed in governing Ogun in a way that will make APC even greater in that State and in the nation,” she said.
Obasanjo-Bello said she was already mobilizing, adding that her works while in office and goodwill in the Senate was speaking for her.
She said the APC was bringing in some fundamental changes that would help women in politics, especially.
“The APC’s push on that bill gives me the confidence that it is the party that will produce the first elected female governor in Nigeria.
“I am confident that if there is a time for a woman to emerge as a state governor, this is the time. This is the opportunity to break that glass ceiling.
“And my hope is that once I’ve done it, it will be the norm for women to contest and win elections as governors.
“Not all the times though, because we will not win just because we’re women, but we will win because we’re the best candidates. And we are delivering service to the people and that is my hope,” she said.
Obasanjo-Bello stated that if elected as the State’s first female governor, she would positively impact on the lives of its people. This she said she would do by giving priority to agriculture, science and technology, healthcare, infrastructural development and job creation.
