About 700 graduates of the Faculty of Law Abia State University, Uturu have sent an SOS message to the Abia State Government under Alex Otti to look into their continued exclusion from attending the mandatory law school programme in pursuit of begin called to Bar.
The graduates who finished their studies from the ABSU, between two and four years ago, lamented that the University is yet to approve their names for Law School.
This is even as the Dean, Faculty of Law of the University, Professor Chijioke Collins confirmed the situation. He assured that efforts are on to tackle the backlog he inherited from his predecessor.
The law graduates who stated that more than five hundred of them have been at their parents’ homes for about four years. This is despite completing all their academic clearances from the institution.
This was disclosed to journalists in Umuahia by the the leader of the affected graduates who simply identified herself as Miss Cherry, for the fear of being victimized.
She pointed out that several appeals have been made in the past to get their names approved, but were ignored in favour of fresh graduating sets.
The concerned law graduates also alleged that there is a fresh plan by the University to only compile the names of the 2025 graduating set without including their names. They regretted that the situation has made them spend about ten years in the University without graduating.
The graduates appealed to Governor Alex Otti and the management of the University to urgently investigate their matter so that they can go to Law School and be called to bar.
“It has been frustrating and shameful staying at home after about four years of finishing our studies. Let our names be approved for Law School,” Cherry said.
However, a source at the Law Campus of Abia State University Uturu, located in Umuahia, confirmed the development.
Confirming the development, Professor Collins said he was aware of about 700 backlog of students yet to go to the Law School. He assured that he is doing everything to see that the backlog is cleared.
Collins, who appealed to the agitated graduates to remain calm, said that his office is appealing to the State apparatus to help the University in securing the supplementary set for April 2026.
He said, “We are having about seven hundred backlog. This new set we compiled will go in February 2026, supplementary may begin in April.
“So, if anybody’s name is not here now, the person’s name may still come up in April,” the Prof. said.
