The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a strong warning against the use of fake social media accounts to spread false information about its officials.
This was contained in a statement by ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa on Friday, in Abuja.
Ebienfa gave the warning following the emergence of a fraudulent Facebook account impersonating the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed.
He explained that the fake account has been used to disseminate false information. With the operators, promising contracts, solicit assistance, and offer rewards to unsuspecting members of the public.
“The Ministry firmly disassociates itself from this impersonation. And, therefore, urged the public to disregard any messages from the fake account. Which is not an official channel,” he said.
Ebienfa also clarified that Ambassador Ahmed does not operate or own any social media accounts.
The spokesperson, therefore, advised the public to avoid engaging with individuals or groups behind such deceptive schemes. This is as he described them as harmful and fraudulent.
He added that the ministry is collaborating with security agencies and Meta, the parent company of Facebook, to investigate and shut down the fake account.
