Gunmen in the early hours of Thursday, launched a coordinated attack on a local vigilante facility in Umunze Community, in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The attack left one vigilante operative dead, report said.
The facility, believed to be part of the Agunaechemba vigilante network established by the Anambra State Government, was attacked in the early hours of the day.
The attackers set five operational vehicles ablaze and partially burned the security office, the report stated.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen overwhelmed the vigilantes stationed at the facility.
“One operative sustained fatal injuries during the gun duel, while others escaped with their lives.”
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. This is as the police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, has confirmed the incident.
He urged the public to provide any information that could aid the police in the investigation.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, also condemned the attack. He therefore, stressed the need for community support to bring the perpetrators to justice.
