The Niger State Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, has warned officers against the use of torture in conducting investigations on suspects.
Elleman stated this during a strategic conference with senior officers of the Command in the State . Among those at the conference included HODs, Tactical Commanders, Area Commanders, and DPOs across the 25 LGAs of the State.
The CP stated that, “The use of torture in investigation activities is contrary to the professional ethics of the job and standard operating procedures.”
He, therefore, cautioned them against obtaining confessional statements through coercion or other unprofessional means.
Elleman maintained that, rather than the use of force, the officers should establish evidence and exhibits to prove cases beyond reasonable doubt.
The Commissioner, however, commended the officers for their efforts in tackling the challenges of thuggery and other vices within Minna metropolis and other major cities in the state.
Elleman also acknowledged that the menace of thuggery is relatively calm. He, therefore, urged the officers to sustain the measures put in place to address these challenges.
The CP then encouraged DPOs not to relent in improving on their anti-crime strategies to curb other identified challenges. Such as confidence-building patrols, active stakeholders’ engagement, and intelligence-led policing for a peaceful environment.
