The Governor of Kebbi State Nasir Idris has directed the immediate reintroduction of history subjects in all primary and secondary schools across the State.
Idris gave the directive during a courtesy visit by the Kebbi State Scholars Association to the Government House in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday
The association is made of Professors and Senior academics from various disciplines in the State. They used the visit to brief the Governor on the association’s objectives, including partnering with the government to accelerate development.
In his remark, a Senior lecturer in History, Culture, and Religious Movements at Federal University Dutsinma, Dr. Mansur Abubakar Warrah urged the government to revive the teaching of history in schools. This, he said, is to pass on the values and legacies of forebears to the younger generation.
He said, “Learning history can reduce insecurity by shielding children from corrupt foreign cultural influences.
“The infiltration of harmful foreign culture has worsened crime and distorted the ideology of our youths.”
“Teaching our rich cultural heritage-decency, good manners, and etiquette-at the basic education level will help shape children into law-abiding and productive citizens.
In his response, Governor Idris agreed with the suggestion and instructed education authorities to resume history lessons in schools.
