The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has called on citizens of the Middle-Belt to avoid actions or rhetoric that could further destabilize the region and the country.
The association stated this in the light of the ongoing violence and attacks in Nigeria’s Middle-Belt region.
The call was contained in a statement issued by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh on Sunday.
He expressed deep concern over the persistent insecurity affecting communities in States like Plateau, Benue, and Gombe.
Okoh, therefore, emphasized the urgent need for unity, dialogue, and collective action to address the humanitarian crisis and restore peace.
He said, “We unequivocally reaffirm our steadfast commitment to advocating for the safety, security, and dignity of the affected communities. We will not relent in our pursuit of justice and lasting peace.”
The Archbishop noted that CAN has consistently condemned the killings. And has undertaken solidarity visits to affected areas to offer comfort and distribute relief materials.
He pointed out that association plans more outreach efforts planned in the coming days.
The CAN President also highlighted the importance of avoiding inflammatory statements or actions that may escalate tensions. This is as he e warned that such behavior poses a grave threat to national cohesion.
Archbishop Okoh, therefore, urged Nigerians from all backgrounds to support peacebuilding efforts. Just as he urged them to participate in inclusive dialogues through both local and international platforms.
Okoh specifically acknowledged the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) and international partners like the United States as key to fostering understanding and promoting long-term solutions.
He said, “Engagements across ethnic, professional, and religious lines are essential for building mutual trust. We must use trusted platforms like NIREC to raise concerns and collaboratively seek solutions.”
CAN also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting unity, peace, and national stability. It called on all Nigerians to embrace the values of love, tolerance, and mutual respect.
“The strength of our nation lies in our unity. Let us come together to build a peaceful and prosperous future,” he said.
