Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma has dismissed the gathering of opposition parties in readiness to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2027 election.
The Governor noted that the party was not afraid of recent meetings by leading opposition parties and their chieftains ahead.
Uzodimma made the remarks on Wednesday at the party National Secretariat in Abuja.
He made the disclosure during the APC National Working Committee signing of an agreement with Tunmef Global Limited, for the commencement of digital membership registration exercise of the party. The initiative is aimed at having a comprehensive and up-to-date database of members of the party.
Recall that ahead of the 2027 general elections, the opposition parties and their leaders have been meeting with a view to wrestling power from APC.
Of recent, former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar led some party chieftains to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Otta, Ogun State.
Among the in Abubakar’s entourage were former Cross Rivers State Governor, Lyel Imoke and former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal.
Though no press statement on the outcome of the meeting of the duo of Obasanjo nor Atiku, political observers are convinced it is related to 2027.
In a similar fashion, the former Kano State Governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigerian People’s Party, NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso was equally in Osun State. He was said to have met with former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola. Their discussion political pundits say was about 2027 elections.
However, reacting to the moves by leaders of the opposition parties, Uzodimma dismissed any threat from such meetings.
He declared that the ruling party, APC, was not bothered by any degree of such meetings. The Governor stated that Nigerians would decide the fate of the ruling party at the next polls.
According to him, we are not afraid of what the opposition will say. Our duty is to organize our party to be respected all over the world. We are expecting elections. APC is not a party built on a platform that expects no contest.
He said, “There is no democracy anywhere in the world without contest. Nigerians will decide.”
The National Chairman, of APC, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje while speaking the event, praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership of the party.
The National Chairman also thanked him for his endorsement to the initiative to digitalize the party membership register.
He said: “We are always making history as a party.”
“I want to thank Mr. President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for approving that we go digital. This program was conceived a long time ago but didn’t see the light of day until now.”
Ganduje expressed confidence that the exercise would provide the ruling party, with accurate and scientific data. Which it could leverage for planning and litigation purposes.
He said, “Without documentation of this type, we are just beating about the bush.
“But with this exercise, we are sure of having scientific data which we can always use. During litigation, sometimes you look for a membership list and get a controversial one, which complicates your case in court. With e-registration, we can easily retrieve our data as it is.”
The National Chairman, however, appealed to the governors for their buy-in into the project. He noted that they would help to ensure seamless success of the project within the stipulated timeframe.
“The implementation of this project is solely on your back as governors and state chairmen.
“I’m happy you are here to see the details and sign the agreement. You are expected to give full cooperation so that we can have our complete data,” he said.
