President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sacked the Vice Chancellors of some Federal Universities across the country. This is even as the University of Abuja and University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, being major casualties.

At the University of Abuja, newly renamed Yakubu Gowon University, President Tinubu dissolved the entire Governing Council. This is even as Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi was relived of her duties as Vice-Chancellor.

In her place, President Tinubu appointed Professor Lar Patricia Manko as the Acting Vice-Chancellor. She is to hold brief for a six-month.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President, Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. He stated that Manko will not be eligible to apply for the permanent position when it becomes available.

The currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Senator Lanre Tejuoso, was also appointed Pro-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University. He will be succeeded in Makurdi by Senator Joy Emordi, now appointed Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.

Further leadership changes also took place at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu was relieved of his position as Acting Vice-Chancellor. This is coming ahead of his tenure’s expiration on February 14.

In his stead, Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam now appointed the new Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months. Ujam is also affected by the same restriction of ineligibility for the permanent position.

The restructuring at UNN also saw a change in the role of Pro-Chancellor. The Pro-Chancellor, Gen. Ike Nwachukwu has been reassigned to the University of Uyo on the same capacity. In his place, Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo was appointed the new Pro-Chancellor of UNN. Ojo had previously held similar positions at the Federal University of Lokoja and the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti.

The current Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi, will now succeed Ojo at the Federal University of Lokoja.While Senator Sani Stores has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education. He is replacing Senator Joy Emordi.

A current Council Member at UNN, Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.

All appointments and reassignment decisions are effective immediately.

This is even as President Tinubu emphasized that these changes are part of his administration’s broader effort to revitalize Nigeria’s higher education system.

According to the statement, the restructuring is aimed at strengthening governance. Ensuring academic excellence, and promoting accountability across the nation’s tertiary education sector.
