The Lagos State Government is set to roll out bulldozers towards the demolition of building erected under high tension power lines in the State.
This was in a statement by the Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Building Control Agency, Adu Ademuyiwa, on Monday.
The Director pointed out that the initiative is aimed to safeguard lives and property in the State.
According to LASBCA, it had issued a seven-day ultimatum for property owners to remove any structure within restricted power line corridors. This is even as the agency warned that non-compliance would result in demolition of structures.
The statement read in part, “As part of proactive measures to protect lives and property, the Lagos State Government, through LASBCA, has directed the removal of all illegal structures erected under high-tension and power lines.
“Property owners have until January 31, 2025, to comply, after which enforcement actions will commence.”
This is even as the LASBCA’s General Manager, Gbolahan Oki, reiterated that the directive aligned with the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development. He pointed out that the law prohibiting construction within restricted zones such as power line corridors is still in force.
The General Manger further cautioned that failure to adhere to the directive would lead to enforcement actions. These, he said, shall include demolition and possible legal sanctions.
He said, “Removing illegal structures is a crucial step in preventing tragedies caused by electrical hazards.”
“High-tension power lines transmit electricity at extremely high voltages. And any structure within their clearance zone poses serious risks. Which include electrocution, power surges, fires, and infrastructural damage due to safety violations,” he added.
Oki, therefore, expressed concern over unauthorized constructions under power lines. He noted that this negatively impact urban planning and environmental sustainability.
The General Manager also emphasized the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting lives and properties.
“Enforcing this directive is part of a broader vision to create a safer and more resilient Lagos,” he added.
Oki, therefore, urged property owners, developers, and residents to comply with building regulations by voluntarily removing structures violating safety standards.
