The leadership of Uturu Development Association National, UDAN, has banned the activities of scavengers popularly called ‘akpakara’ from all the communities in Uturu.
This was disclosed following a meeting held by the national executives of UDAN, UDAN NEC, Ndi Eze and President Generals of autonomous Communities. Also in attendance in the meeting were former President Generals, Uturu Women executives, Women leaders of the autonomous Communities, Uturu Youth Executives, Youth leaders of the autonomous communities, the DOPS, Uturu police and other relevant stakeholders.
The meeting, which was convened on Saturday, January 18, 2025, was held at the Uturu unity hall, Ekeukwu.
Among the resolution reached at the end of the meeting were that Uturu maintain her ancient market system. It resolved that the Nwkoachara market be held at Achara and Nwkoabo at Ukwuangwu.
That any Nwkoachara market day that falls in a Sunday is to take place on a Saturday before the Sunday. It also held that if it is Afor market day (Aho Ndundu) it will hold at Ukwuangwu.
The Association also stated that ‘Akpakara’ scavenging business is finally and completely banned in Uturu. It instructed members of the community to report anyone found engaging the ‘akpakara’ scavenging scrap business within Uturu community to UDA.
The Association warned that any Uturu indigene in the akpakara business should change business or carry his activities outside Uturu.
UDAN advised any Uturu man or woman doing akpakara business in Uturu to reconsider the business. It advised anyone wanting to change business but finding it difficulty doing so to consult UDA.
The Association informed that electrification of Uturu communities is in progress. It noted that the committee is working in synergy with the Government and EEDC.
UDAN called on the people to guard electricity installation in their communities jealously.
