The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has sealed over 150 shops at Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia State. This is coming on the heels of the discovery of counterfeit and expired products valued at ₦5 billion at the market.
Recall that during a two-day enforcement operation on December 16 and 17, 2024, NAFDAC uncovered massive production and distribution of fake goods.
These included beverages, wines, spirits, carbonated drinks, and vegetable oils. Also discovered were revalidated food items such as noodles, powdered milk, and yoghurt.
Following the discovery, the Director of NAFDAC’s South-East Zone, Dr Martins Iluyomade, expressed frustration over the market’s persistent illegal activities. He regretted that Eziukwu Market, Aba has become a hotspot for counterfeit and substandard products.
Iluyomade noted that market leaders had previously pledged in December 2023 to expose counterfeiters but failed to honour their commitment.
Recall that the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has reiterated the agency’s zero tolerance for such practices.
Adeyeye emphasized NAFDAC’s steadfast dedication to protecting public health and resolving the widespread issue of counterfeit products in the market.
