The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has invited the suspended 18 Edo State Local Government Chairmen. The Chairmen who are facing suspension by the Edo State House of Assembly are facing interrogation on their financial activities.

The EFCC invitation was contained in a letter by the agency’s Director of Investigation, Abdulkarim Chukkol. The letter was addressed to the Secretary to the Edo State Government.

In a letter, dated December 17, EFCC specifically directed the Chairpersons of Akoko-Edo, Egor, Esan Central, Esan Northeast, Esan Southeast, and Esan West to report to its office on Thursday, December 19 (today).

To also report at the Commission’s office on Thursday are the Chairpersons of Etsako Central, Etsako East, and Etsako West Local Government Areas.

However, the remaining Chairpersons from Igueben, Ikpoba Okha, Orhionmwon, Ovia Northeast, Ovia Southwest, Owan East, Owan West, and Uhunmwode Local Governments Areas are to report on Friday, December 20.

The Chairpersons are requested to come with certified true copies of comprehensive documentation relating to staff strength and payroll.

Other documents requested of them included details of accounts where funds are received for payment of staff salaries. Details of accounts where funds are reserved for staff salaries exigencies. And the statement of account of the said accounts from January 1 to date.

Chukkol noted that the request was made based on Section 38(1); (2) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004.

Recall that on December 17, the Edo House of Assembly suspended the 18 Local Government Chairmen and their Deputies for alleged insubordination and misconduct.

The suspension followed their failure to submit their financial statements as directed by the newly sworn in Governor, Monday Okpebholo.
