House of Representatives on Wednesday called for the closure of illegal loan platforms used by “one chance” operatives to extort money from victims online.
This is even as the lawmakers urged the Nigeria Police, banks, and FinTech operators to prioritize cases of “one chance” illegal loan apps.
The Reps pointed out that operations or kidnappings must be taken seriously in order to combat the scourge.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Billy Osawaru during plenary on Wednesday.
Osawaru described the activities of “one chance” operatives as “heinous”. He added that their actions have left many of the victims in a dire state. Thereby subjecting them to severe torture and emptying their bank accounts.
The lawmaker further noted that banks are often reluctant to assist complainants until police reports are provided.
According to the lawmaker, in many cases, the phone numbers and bank accounts of victims are used to borrow money from illegal and unauthorized loan apps. Thereby incurring huge debts that the victims are forced to repay.”
The motion was adopted unanimously without debate.
