A trigger-happy policeman has reportedly cut shut the life of a young boy in Ozoro Community, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State over the throwing of knockout banger.
According to reports, the incident occurred Saturday night, when policemen stormed the area and found a knockout in the victim’s possession.
DAILY POST reports that the police tried to arrest the deceased boy, but he resisted. And in his attempt to escape, one of the Policemen opened fire and killed him.
Reacting the incident, the Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancement, ISRCA, condemned the police action.
This was contained in a statement by ISRCA National Coordinator, Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen.
“I condemn in strong terms, the unprofessional conduct of the Police operative alleged to have perpetuated the act,” he said.
ISRCA also appealed to well-meaning Nigerians especially indigenes of Ozoro Community to be civil in their approach at all times. It noted that this is important, especially when dealing with armed Police officers.
The social group, however, urged the Nigeria Police Force Delta State to carry out a thorough investigation on the matter. It also urged the Force to bring the erring officer to justice just as they condoled with the family of the deceased.
Agberen said, “I sympathize with the family of the young boy that was allegedly shot by a Police officer at Ozoro last night. Arising from knockouts that were found in his possession. It was alleged that the young man resisted arrest. And while he was running, he was shot by one of the Police officers.”
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the incident.
Responding to enquiries, the Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe in a WhatsApp message confirmed the incident.
“The policeman has been identified and detained,” Edafe said.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police has assured the family of the deceased of justice.
