Reasons behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu advise to the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Labour Party, LP and others to seek legal redress if they don’t agree with the outcome of the 2024 Ondo State governorship election has been revealed. This is even as the President congratulated the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Lucky Aiyedatiwa for coming victorious in the election.

Speaking on the outcome of the election which was held on Saturday, November 16, Tinubu said, “Those dissatisfied with the outcome of the election can explore the opportunities provided by the judicial system to seek redress on areas of conflict.

This was disclosed in a statement from the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, and quoted by Daily Trust.

The statement read in part, “President Tinubu believes the Ondo State election was another litmus test of the capacity of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.  Affirming that the electoral body justified the confidence of the people with early preparations. Deployment of staff and materials, and handling of the electoral process.”

Recall that President Tinubu, had his victory in the 2023 presidential election challenged in court by the opposition parties of PDP and Labour Party.

Tinubu applauded INEC for uploading more than 98 per cent of the results on the same day of the election.

This is as against what happened in the 2023 presidential election. Therefore, the failure by INEC to upload results on the INEC Election Result Viewer (IReV) portal formed grounds for litigation.

The case dragged to the Supreme Court where it was eventually settled and President Tinubu’s victory, affirmed.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Sunday declared Lucky Aiyedatiwa winner of the election.

Announcing the poll, the INEC’s Returning Officer, Olayemi Akinyemi, stated that the incumbent Governor secured 366,781 votes. He defeated the former Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 117,845.

However, some election observers has pointed out that the election was marred by irregularities. These they said included vote-buying and violence in some parts of the State. These happened despite the presence of security officers.
