Following last Wednesday attack on a military checkpoint at Umuopara Community in Umuahia South LGA of Abia State by unknown gunmen, the immediate community, Ekenobizi has turned to a ghost town.
According to a news report by DAILY POST, there is fear of a reprisal attack on the community by the military.
Recall that the attack by the gunmen claimed the lives of some soldiers.
The incident has also been condemned by Governor Alex Otti who promised to collaborate with security agencies in arresting those responsible.
However, DAILY POST reports that many youths of Ekenobizi Community have fled the community since the incident on Wednesday. This is even as the community has remained a ghost town, for fear of the military carrying out a reprisal attack on the community.
The situation has also affected economic activities like trading and farming in the community.
Like other well-meaning Abians, a former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Abia State, Lucky Igbokwe has condemned the killings. He described the killing of the soldiers as barbaric, heinous and wicked.
While urging the military authorities to go after those responsible for the attack, Igbokwe, called for caution. He said the military should spare the innocent members of Ekenobizi of any reprisal.
According to Igbokwe, a high-level intelligence gathering and globally accepted standard should be used in getting the attackers. Not invasion of the area, he pleaded.
Speaking in the same light, the President of Enyioma Foundation, Enyinnaya Duke-Ako Atuloma condemned the killing. He described gruesome killing of the soldiers as senseless and atrocious.
Atuloma, however, appealed to the military authorities to apply professionalism in the search for the real attackers. He pleaded that the community should not be invaded in reprisal.
