An Ebonyi man, identified as Onyiuke Nwedeogu, has died after he allegedly set himself ablaze in the early hours of Sunday over quarrel with his wife.
According to reports, Nwedeogu also set his family house on fire, where his wife, Felicia Nwedeogu, and their three daughters lived.
DAILY POST reports that the tragic incident occurred at Ndiechi Igbeagu in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Quoting an eyewitness, who requested anonymity, DAILY POST reported that the conflict began on Sunday morning when the man had a minor altercation with his wife. The quarrel, however, led him to beat up his wife.
According to the eyewitness, Nwedeogu took the matter to his parents, who lived a few kilometers away. But he was dissatisfied with their attempts to mediate on the matter.
“He then rushed back to his residence, forcibly removed the window protectors where his wife and three children were. And set the building on fire with petrol. This is knowing that his family members were asleep in the early hours of the morning.
Another source also revealed that after the altercation, Nwedeogu took his belongings to their provision store. He locked it, and left, only to return at night with a gallon of petrol and set the house on fire.
The source added that the man’s wife, Felicia Nwedeogu and her three children were, however, rescued through the window.
Nwedeogu, after setting the building on fire, drove away in his bus to a location where he set himself on fire. He was, however, rescued by one Elijah who rushed him to Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital (AE-FETHA), where he died on Wednesday.
Reports confirmed that the deceased’s body has been deposited at the AE-FETHA morgue.
The Ebonyi State Police Command is yet to make a statement on the development. This is even as the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, stated that the command is yet to receive the report at the time of this publication.
