Notwithstanding the current food insecurity confronting the nation, more hunger is looming as suspected bandits have set fire to harvested maize on six farms in Kwaga village and Unguwar Zako in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

This is even as the villagers, especially the owners of the affected farms, were left in shock. While lamenting their loss caused by the bandits.

DAILY TRUST reported that the incident occurred on Sunday night when the bandits stormed the farms and set fire to all the harvested maize.

This is even as the media reported that clips of video obtained by it showed the charred remains of the affected farms. While the owners of the farm produce were seen consoling one another.

According to the report, the affected farm owners included Kabiru Halilu Kwaga, who had harvested over 160 bags of maize last year. Kwaga was hoping for an even larger harvest this year. However, all of his crops were set ablaze by the attackers.

Another farmer, Surajo Kwaga, who had harvested 40 bags of maize from his farm last year, also lost his entire crop to the fire. Similarly, Malam Dan Gido, harvested 50 bags last year and was expecting about 65 bags this year. His expectations were, however, cut short by the bandits who set his produce on fire.

Another farmer, Jibril Haladu Kwaga also lost his harvested maize in the incident.

However, the affected farmers have prayed for divine consolation for their losses.

Chairman of the Birnin Gwari-Niger Inter-boundaries Communities Association, Ishaq Usman Kasai, confirmed the disaster. He stated that the bandits responsible for the destruction were part of the group led by the notorious kingpin Yellow Jamboros. The group has been terrorizing communities in the area for a long time.

By the time of this report, the Kaduna State Government have not issued any press statement. Also, efforts to reach the Kaduna State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, proved abortive.
