Following the verdict of the Confederation of African Football, CAF, on the case involving the Nigerian Super Eagles and the Libya Football Federation, Libya have reportedly started targeting Nigerians through widespread arrests.
This was contained in a report quoting Nigerians residing in Libya.
Recall that Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, had lodged a formal complaint against the LFF over the mistreatment of the Super Eagles in Libya.
Recall that the Super Eagles of Nigeria faced significant challenges during their trip to Libya for the return tie for the AFCON qualifiers. The plane carrying the Super Eagles was redirected to land in another airport in Libya. The players and official spent over 18 hours of delays, and logistical issue’
Following the development, NFF recalled the team, thereby abandoning playing the return leg of the march in Libya.
As a result, CAF canceled the match, awarding three goals and three points to the Super Eagles while slamming a $50,000 fine on the Libyans.
Recall that Super Eagles had during the first leg of the match played in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State defeated the Libyan team 1-0.
According to reports, the Libyan media took to the airwaves to call for the arrest of Nigerians residing in the country without proper documentation as a result of the CAF verdict.
The report stated that development suggests that fines imposed on the LFF would now be shifted onto the Nigerian populace.
This is even as social media outlets have echoed this sentiment. They have alleged that Nigerian workers are a drain on Libyan resources.
A local blog, Libya News Today 1, issued a statement urging the government to apprehend undocumented Nigerian workers. It asserted that Nigerians should be fined $500 and taxed appropriately.
According to Punch a Nigerian living in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, Adenaike Emmanuel, said the arrests had begun.
He said, “They have already started. The news came out on Saturday, and they were saying they can’t accept it. And that they are not the ones who will pay the money. They have started proving this.
“Someone called me and said they had already begun arresting people in his area. The same thing is happening here in Tripoli. In some places, people were arrested on Sunday morning and afternoon. As I mentioned before, Libyans don’t hide their feelings. They believe that by doing this, they are getting their revenge,” Adenaike stated.
