A 21-year-old scavenger, Ibrahim Usman, would recieve eight strokes of the cane for stealing a she-goat for stealing a she-goat at Ungwan Rimi Area of Kaduna State. This was even as the Chief Magistrate stated that the court was merciful with the defendant because he did not waste time in admitting his guilt.
Appearing before the court on Thursday, Usman admitted to committing the offence. He, however, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, saying that he was misguided by his friends.
Delivering his judgment, the Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, stated that the court was merciful with the defendant because he did not waste time in admitting his guilt.
Emmanuel, therefore, ordered that Usman be given eight strokes of the cane. The Magistrate also warned him to desist from committing crime in future.
Emmanuel added that the court might not be lenient the next time he appeared before him.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the convict committed the offence on Oct. 6 at Ungwan Rimi, Kaduna.
Leo stated that the convict, who was caught by members of the vigilante group with the goat at Ali Akilu Road, Kaduna, could not give satisfactory explanation on how he got it.
According to the Inspector, the convict confessed that he stole the goat from his neighbour’s house.
Leo stated that the offence contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
