A medical doctor in Enugu State, Dr. Emmanuel Ugwumba, 52, has been nabbed by the Enugu State Police Command for alleged child trafficking and forgery.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on Wednesday in Enugu.
Ndukwe stated that Ugwumba was arrested in Ezimo-Agu Community in Udenu LGA of the State. He was arrested by the Command’s operatives serving in the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad on September 28, 2024.
He said the suspect’s arrest followed the interception of a public notice on an abandoned child made by the suspect.
The PPRO stated that Ugwumba had endorsed the publication in the name of the Enugu State Ministry of Gender and Social Development as the Director of OTZ. The publication was published on a national daily.
Narrating the arrest, Ndukwe said upon the doctor’s arrest, he was found to be involved in child trafficking. The doctor was found with one pregnant woman, a four-year-old child, and another two-year-old child, both female.
He said, “Investigation revealed that the suspect claimed to be a graduate of medicine and surgery from the University of Jos. He also owns and manages Chima Hospital and Maternity located at Ugbaike Enugu-Ezike in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area.
“It was further discovered that between 2017 and 2024, he conspired with an acclaimed staff of the Ministry and others at large. He conducted ante-natal care and delivery of seven yet-to-be-traced children from different mothers in the hospital.”
Ndukwe stated that the suspect was also found to be in unauthorized possession of different documents from the Ministry of Gender Affairs. He was also caught with unverified pest/vector certificates from the Enugu State Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources.
