Amidst controversies and protests, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, has successfully conducted the Rivers State Local Government election in the State.
According to reports emanating from the oil rich State, the LG is proceeding as scheduled. This is in spite of the controversies and protests that marred preparation for the election.
Recall that stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the State asked Governor Siminalayi Fubara to suspend the process.
According to DAILY POST reports both sensitive and non-sensitive election materials arrived at the Registration and Accreditation Centers (RACs) in some Local Government Areas.
including the Government Technical College in Ahoada East.
DAILY POST reports that the atmosphere in the State reflects typical election day conditions. “With roads notably quiet, but with the absence of the Nigeria Police Force.”
Recall that Governor Fubara, had on Friday, reaffirmed his commitment to moving forward with the election. This is despite the Rivers State Police Command’s decision to withdraw from overseeing the process.
Reacting to the development, Fubara accused the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of bias. He alleged that the IGP was of attempting to undermine the election in favor of “an Abuja-based politician.”
Also, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, emphasized that the election would proceed as planned. The Commission, therefore, encouraged residents to exercise their voting rights in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
