There is no love lost in the National Assembly between the House of Representatives and Senate. This is even as the members of the Green Chambers have turned down the National Honour conferred on Speaker Tajudeen Abbas by President Bola Tinubu.
Recall that on Tuesday, Tinubu announced the award of National Honours to the Senate President and Speaker House of Representatives among others.
The President conferred the title of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Akpabio,. While the Speaker of House of Representatives, Jibrin Barau was conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic, CFR.
Tinubu also used the occasion to conferred titles on the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere Ekun.
But reacting to the title conferred on their speaker, members of the House of Reps on Wednesday condemned the act. They described it as discriminatory to the House of Reps.
According to them, President Bola Tinubu discriminated against the House by giving Senate President Godswill Akpabio a higher honour.
The feeling was echoed in a motion of urgent public importance moved by Philip Agbese on Wednesday.
Following the motion, the House resolved the Reps are not inferior to Senators. They, therefore, so moved that both leaders should be treated equally.
According reports, the motion, which was signed by 360 members of the House, called for the abolition of the dichotomy between the “upper chamber and lower chamber nomenclature”. They stated that both chambers are equal.
The House, however, did not call for the withdrawal of the title of the Senate President.
