The Kwara State Government has hailed the court judgment on the Offa Bank deadly robbery, describing the sentencing of the convicts to death by hanging as a triumph of good over evil.
This was contained in a statement by the Kwara State Commissioner for Communication, Bola Olukoju.
The Commissioner extended the State Government condolences to the people of Offa and families of the victims killed by the robbers. Olukoju also commended the prosecution team in the case for what it described as intelligent job.
The statement partly reads: “Kwara State Government heaves a great sigh of relief at the judgment of the State High Court, which convicted the five criminals involved in the April 26, 2018 armed robbery in Offa.
“The Government is happy that justice has been served to the victims of that unforgivable crime. To their families and loved ones. To the State against which the crime was committed, and to the criminals themselves. The judgment is a triumph of good and rule of law over evil and impunity!
“The Government commends the firmness and erudition of the court on this important case. History will not forget the forthrightness of the court,” the statement said.
Recall that in pronouncing the judgment, the presiding judge, Justice Haleema Salman had adopted final written addresses from the two parties. The State team was led by Rotimi Jacob (SAN) and Mathew Emeribe for the defence counsel.
Delivering judgement, Justice Salman found the robbers guilty of all the count-charges and sentenced them accordingly.
The court held that the five suspects had no license to carry arms and sentenced them to three years imprisonment.
The lead defence counsel, Emeribe though was not in court, one of the defense counsels accepted the judgment. He said the judgment was expected and will be appealed.
The suspects guilty of conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
Recall that the case had been on for almost six years. During the bank robbery attack, more than 30 persons including policemen were killed in the incident.
