Amidst threat of boycott of the Saturday, September 28 Anambra State Local Government election by the Labour Party, the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, has named the party among the nine political parties taking part in the election.
ANSIEC listed the Labour Party in a publication of final list of candidates on Thursday in Awka.
According to ANSIEC, the political parties participating in the elections include Action Alliance, AA and Accord Party. Others are the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Labour Party, LP and New Nigeria Peoples’ Party, NNPP.
Also listed are the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Zenith Labour Party, ZLP, Young Progressives Party, YPP, and Social Democratic Party, SDP.
In the statement, the electoral umpire, said APGA was the only party to field candidates for all the 21 Chairmanship and 326 Councillorship positions. While PDP fielded 18 out of the 21 Chairmanship and 228 out of the 326 Ward Councillorship positions.
NNPP fielded 8 candidates out of the 21 Chairmanship and 37 candidates out the 326 Councillorship positions. While LP fielded 6 candidate for Chairmanship and 12 for Councillorship positions.
Accord Party has 4 candidates for Chairmanship and 4 for Councillorship positions. And YPP fielded 3 candidates for Chairmanship and 44 for Councillorship positions.
AA fielded one candidate each for Chairmanship and Councillorship positions. While SDP fielded one candidate for Chairmanship 9 for Councillorship positions.
Also to field candidates is the ZLP that has only 4 candidates for Councillorship position.
ANSIEC, however, stated that the All Progressives Congress, APC, did not field candidates. The Commission said the APC had officially withdrew from the Local Government elections. The party cited concerns over electoral irregularities.
The APC had announced its decision to withdraw from the election on September 8. It also revealed plans to challenge the election process in court.
