No fewer than twelve persons have reportedly died as a result of outbreak of cholera in Adamawa State, northern part of the country.
This was confirmed in a media briefing by the State Commissioner for Health, Felix Tangwami in Yola. He stated that over 300 persons have been hospitalized and 244 discharged across four Local Government Areas of the State.
With this development, Adamawa state has joined States affected by the cholera outbreak in the country. This is attributed to the flooding of communities and poor hygiene among others.
Recently, the Adamawa State Government announced that the four Local Government Areas were affected by watery diarrhea. The Government gave the LGAs as Yola North, Yola South, Girei and Fufore.
According to the Commissioner, thirty samples were collected and sent to the National Reference Laboratory to ascertain the causes of the infection. While victims were isolated at the Infectious Disease Centre at the Specialist Hospital, Yola.
Addressing journalists in Yola, Tangwami spoke on the availability of the vaccines in the State. He said the UNICEF health officer in the State, Olusheyi Oloshide assured the Government that cholera vaccines have been received in the State. He noted that this will help to assist in containing the outbreak.
Tangwami noted that the confirmation of the outbreak becomes necessary following earlier announcements that what the State had was acute watery diarrhea.
“Already the state has received cholera vaccines from their partners.
“The Government has, however, called on the public to remain calm and improve their hygiene.
Tangwami also pointed out that surveillance officers have been deployed to educate the public on the outbreak.
He noted that this measure is to prevent the spread of the disease to other Local Government Areas.
