A Chieftain of the Labour Party, Yunusa Tanko, has stated that only the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will decide the legality of the intervention in the party’s leadership crisis by the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti and Peter Obi.
Recall that Otti and Obi had last week Wednesday appointed a 29-man Caretaker Committee to lead the party in the interim.
A former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman was appointed Chairman of the Committee.
Tanko stated this while responding to a question regarding the legality of the intervention on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday. He maintained that only INEC could decide the legality of the appointment by Governor Otti.
He said, “It is left for INEC to look at the legality and make pronouncement. So, I have nothing to do with that at the moment because they are the electoral umpire. They know what the law says. It is better for them to make the pronouncement.”
Among those appointed into the committee is a former Senate Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Darlington Nwokocha. He was also appointed as the Secretary of the committee.
Other members are those representing various interest groups in the party. This include NLC, TUC, Senate, House of Representatives, House of Assembly, and Gubernatorial Candidates in the last election.
Recall that the embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure has rejected the committee. He stated that the meeting called by Otti was illegal. He, therefore, asked Nigerians to disregard the outcome of the stakeholders meeting in Umuahia.
This was contained in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh. He said the meeting was not organized in line with the party’s constitution, therefore does not reflect its position or interests.
The Abure camp also expressed shock that “the so-called Chairman of the Caretaker Committee is not a registered member of the Party.
They revealed that she surfaced during the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign to assist Peter Obi in his campaign.
