A ghastly road accident on Friday has left members of the Heartland Football Club of Owerri severely injured. The incident which occurred at Umunna, Okigwe, Imo State when the club was on their way to Abakaliki for the Ifeanyi Ekwueme TICO/SELECT Pre-season Tournament.

According to reports, some players and officials of the Heartland FC sustained different degrees of injury.

They were rushed to a nearby health facility where they received first-aid treatment.

The former Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, has confirmed the accident.

The statement from the NPFL stated:

“The accident happened at Umunna close to Okigwe still within Imo State.”

“The vehicle in its attempt to dodge an oncoming vehicle collided with another carelessly parked vehicle from another accident.”

However, an online news media, News Mirror reports that the former Head of Coach of the team, Christian Obi has died from injuries sustained in the accident.

News Mirror quoted the Imo State FA Chairman to have confirmed the death of the former head coach.

“I have been contacted, its been confirmed, may his soul rest in prefect peace…Amen!”

“The tactician was staying in the front roll of the bus, which was the exact point the car collided with the tipper. He gave up on the way to the hospital,” the News Mirror stated.
