Tragedy struck in Kaurar Wanke Village of Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto on Sunday as family of five died after consuming soup prepared with fertilizer.

According to reports, the family had mistaken for the substance as Monosodium Glutamate Seasoning (Farin Maggi). They ate the food on Thursday, but the five of them died on Sunday.

The incident was confirmed by the State Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Asabe Balarabe, on Monday.

She stated that the tragedy occurred when the five victims consumed the locally prepared soup, with substance, mistaken for seasoning monosodium glutamate (Farin Maggi) in Hausa.

According to the Commissioner, three of the victims died on Friday. While the remaining two died in her presence at the Sokoto Specialist Hospital on Sunday.

Balarabe added that two more victims of the ill-fated soup are critically ill. She said they are currently receiving medication at Sokoto Specialist Hospital as at yesterday.

The Commissioner further explained that though she was not in the State when she got the report, she directed for quick response to the case. She stated that she ordered the immediate dispatch of the directors concerned to act with urgency on the matter with a view to saving lives.

Balarabe, however, expressed sadness that despite the frantic efforts by the ministry officials to save their lives, the victims still died. She pointed out that the substance consumed had already neutralized their body organs resulting in their untimely death.

The Commissioner, therefore, advised people to keep all poisonous and chemical substances far away from kitchens. She said they should separate chemicals from foodstuffs where children may not lay their hands on them.

A relation of the victims, Muhammad Abdullahi, who spoke on the incident, thanked the Commissioner. He praised her for her concern and timely intervention and prayed Allah to reward her abundantly.

“Since the incident, the Commissioner and her Directors have been at their best, from the village to the hospital. Which the Community described as worthy of commendation,” Abdullahi said.

Responding to the tragic incident, the Chief Medical Director of Sokoto Specialist Hospital, Dr. Attahiru Sokoto, bemoaned the deaths. He described the incident as unfortunate.
