The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Wednesday, lamented the disappearance of corruption case documents of former Governor of the State, Dr. Umar Ganduje.

Yusuf raised the alarm following an on-the-spot assessment of the Kano State High Court, which was vandalized, during the recent nationwide hunger protest in the State.

Recall that protesters looted and razed amidst the recent nationwide hunger protest, some facilities in Kano State.

The Governor disclosed this during his tour of the vandalized facilities in the State. He, however, regretted the invasion and destruction of the State High Court by hoodlums.

Yusuf lamented that “the hired miscreants carted away corruption charges documents on former Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Recall that the former Governor and the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, has been facing multiple charges of corruption.

This was disclosed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, on Wednesday. He noted that the Governor was conducted round the court premises by the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi. The Attorney General was accompanied by the Chief Registrar of the high court, Alhaji Abdullahi Bayero, and some judges.

Tofa quoted the Governor to have said, “It is very unfortunate that enemies of Kano State hired undesirable elements to vandalize one of the historic public buildings with a mission to subvert the corruption charges against the acting National Chairman of the APC and former governor of the State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his family and aides.”

“The hoodlums destroyed virtually all units of the High Court. Including the office of the State Chief Judge. With loss amounting to more than N1 billion through the stealing of office equipment. Destroying offices, burning cars and other relevant documents crucial to the dispensation of justice,” the statement read.

Governor Yusuf called on youths in the State to desist from being used by detractors to engage in violence. He urged them to rather concentrate on skills acquisition to better their future, promising them the government’s support.

Yusuf, thereafter, ordered the immediate rehabilitation of the courthouse. He also, ordered the deployment of more security to ensure effective justice delivery.

The Governor also commiserated with the Kano State Chief Judge, Justice Dije Abdu Aboki, and the entire judiciary over what he described as an ugly incident.

Yusuf, however, commended the people of the State for their support and cooperation with his present administration. He, therefore, prayed for the sustenance of the tempo for peace, stability, and prosperity, and economic development in the state.

Recall that the management of the State High Court had in a statement on August 4 lamented the invasion, vandalism and burning of the High Court. It, however, stated that investigation had begun to track down the perpetrators.

The spokesperson for the court, Baba Ibrahim, recalled that on August 1, rioters, who claimed to be #EndBadGovernment protesters, broke into the premises of the headquarters of the State High Court. They vandalized offices and “stole an unspecified amount of money and guns seized from kidnappers and kept as exhibits in ongoing cases,” Punch reported.

“Private and official vehicles parked on the premises of the court were razed. While some were vandalized by the protesters, Punch quoted Ibrahim to have said.

“Offices, including that of the Chief Judge and other judges in the court, were vandalized. The protesters destroyed the new and old case files and scattered everything in the buildings.

“Exhibits, including guns kept in the court’s store, were also looted.

“This is the first time the Kano State Judiciary has witnessed such an incident. Vehicles parked on the court’s promises were also vandalized, and looted,” Ibrahim said.
