President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Bostwana declared Tuesday afternoon a holiday in preparation to welcome home Olympic sprinter gold medalist, Letsile Tebogo.

The country is still basking in the euphoria of her fist gold medal in an Olympic event.

Recall that Tebogo pulled a surprise when he dramatically won the 200m gold medal at the Olympic game in France.

According to reports, the Botswana’s Olympic team was due to return on Tuesday with Tebogo’s gold. The country’s relay team also won silver medal in the men’s 4x400m relay.

In all, Bostwana secured four Olympic medals in the competition in France.

With Tebogo, feat, the 21-year-old became the first African to win the men’s 200m. He also set an African record time of 19.46sec.

To winning the gold medal, Tebogo powered past Americans Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles in Paris on August 8.

To welcome the hero home, traditional dancers performed at the beginning of a welcoming ceremony for Botswana’s Gold medalist Letsile Tebogo.

Multitude of Bostwana were seen lined up at the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Gaborone on August 13, 2024, to welcome the contingents.

The Bostwana President, Masisi had already granted the country of 2.3 million people a half-day holiday on August 9 to celebrate the triumph.

The President was also at the Airport to welcome home the track hero.

Supporters were seen waving flags at the beginning of a welcoming ceremony for Botswana’s Gold medalist, Letsile Tebogo.

Tebogo is only the second African athlete to win an Olympic medal in the men’s 200m. The first is the Namibian Frankie Fredericks who took silver in Atlanta in 1996.

Botswana won their first Olympic medal at the 2012 London Games when Nijel Amos took silver in the 800m. Its men’s 4x400m relay team took bronze at Tokyo 2020.
