In an effort to reducing the high rate of unemployment in the country, the Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu has lifted a 25-year embargo on employment in the State Civil Service.
This was contained in a statement by the Cross River State Commissioner for Information, Erasmus Ekpang. He stated this while fielding question form the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Calabar on Wednesday.
The Commissioner noted that the last time mass employment took place in the civil service in the State was in 1999. Ekpang, however, pointed that the employment would be carried out in batches. He said 2,000 people would be recruited in the first batch.
The Commissioner emphasized that the recruitment exercise would begin immediately. He stated that it will be carried out across all the Ministry, Department and Agencies (MDAs).
He said, “The immediate past administration tried to employ. But when the present government came in, lots of flaws were discovered in that exercise.
“As we speak, the state civil service is almost depleted. And we are indeed happy that the Governor has considered it necessary to recruit at this point in time.”
Commenting on the contentious N70,000 new minimum wage, Ekpang said, “That will be considered at the appropriate time.”
Recall that the residents of Cross River State did not compile with the order of the #EndBadGovernance protest organizers. As a result, therefore, Cross River State did not witness any protest on August 1.
Following this development, the Governor Otu has commended the people of the State. He praised them for not participating in the nationwide protest against economic hardship.
The Governor also specifically commended the youths for allowing peace to reign in Cross River.
