With the August 1 date for the commencement of the proposed nationwide protest, Nigerian soldiers have taken over major roads in Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja. This, ISUIKWUATO VOICE gathered is to forestall any break down of law and order before, during and after the planned protest.
Our correspondent reports that commuters plying the ever-busy Keffi-Abuja Expressway Road were on Monday left stranded. This was a result of the military barricading the highway to conduct a stop-and-search operation. All vehicles entering the territory were subjected to a thorough search by the military operatives.
Conspicuous of the roadblocks were those mounted at Sani Abacha barracks before the popular AYA roundabout.
As a result, thereof, the blockade caused a gridlock extending as far as Nyanya Bridge. Which is more than 12 kilometres from the checkpoint.
Recall that majority of the civil servants and traders who work and do business in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) live outside the city centre. They abode in Nasarawa State in places such as Nyanya, Karu, Mararaba and Masaka.
Our correspondent reported that majority of the stranded workers were forced to return home as a result of the barricade. This is after waiting for hours on the traffic without any sign of vehicular movement.
This is coming three days to the planned nationwide protest over the current economic hardship in Nigeria.
Recall that some youths are planning a nationwide protest from August 1 against. They are protesting the rising cost of living and economic hardship in the country.
