Nigerian President. Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appealed to Nigerians planning to protest the excruciating economic hardship in the country to shelve their planned protests.

Recall that groups of youth across the country are mobilizing for a nationwide protest against bad governance in the country. The protest slated to begin on August 1, is said to last for ten days.

But in efforts to avert the looming protest and its attendant disruption to the economy, the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris has appealed to Nigerians to calm down.

The Minister made the appeal during a briefing of State House correspondents after a meeting with the President on Tuesday.

According to Idris, Tinubu urged the organizers of the protest to shelve the plan. He urged them to await the President’s response to their complaints.

“The issue of the planned protest, Mr. President does not see any need for that. He’s asked them to shelve that plan. He’s asked them to await the government’s response to all their pleas,” Idris said.

Recall that Nigeria had just overcame the organized labour protracted strike following the announcement of the N70,000 new minimum wage.

Though no one can lay hold to those planning the protest against economic hardship, fear is gaining traction on social media.

According to unverified news on some social media platforms, the protest is scheduled to hold across all States of the Federation. As well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, starting from August 1.

Recall that the nation’s economy took a twist following the announcement of the removal of fuel subsidy by President Tinubu on May 29, 2023. While Nigerians were still trying to understand what was happening, the Naira, the nation’s currency was devalued. These twin policies shot the prices of food and basic commodities above the roof tops with attendant hardships.

The nation is now battling one of the country’s worst inflation and economic crisis in history.
