The Federal Government of Nigeria has commissioned the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, multipurpose hospital built in Obeaja, Ugwunagbo LGA of Abia State.
The 100 beds health facility was started by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. And was completed by the present administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Commissioning the project, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti thanked President Tinubu for completing the hospital.
The Governor also commended the President for converting the hospital into a multi-purpose hospital. Which will help to accommodate the health needs of other members of society.
Otti assured that the Abia State Government would assume the management of the new hospital.
He said that the State Government would provide 24-hours security for the facility.
Otti added that lands for the building of doctors’ quarters and a facility management team would be needed. This, he said, would help to maintain high standards in the facility.
The Governor expressed joy that the maternal mortality rate in the State has drastically reduced to 136 presently.
The previous rate was 1047 in 2020 and 531 in 2022, as disclosed by the Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, the Governor said.
Otti, however, assured that the maternal mortality would further be reduced in the State.
The Governor regretted that Nigerians spend between $1.6 billion and $2 billion on medical tourism annually.
He, therefore, assured that his administration will build a medical village to tackle the trend.
In his remark, the Chief Executive Officer of the Abia State Hospital Management Board, Dr. Odochi Azubuike, expressed appreciation the FG.
He stated that the facility is fully equipped to provide healthcare for mothers and children in the State.
