Following the heavy down pour of rain fall and the flooding of many areas in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has reassured that no lives were lost at Trademore Estate flooding incident.

This was contained in a statement by the FCT Emergency Management Department, FEMD. The department stated that through its verification team, there were no casualties in the Estate.

Recall that a video, which went viral on social media claimed that two individuals were swept away by the floods.

But the claim has been refuted by the Acting Director-General of FEMD, Florence Wenegieme. According to her, following an assessment of the affected areas after Monday’s downpour at Trademore Estate, we declare that no life was lost.

Wenegieme said: “We did not receive any distress call from Trademore Estate. When we saw the viral video and we went there to carry out an assessment.

“We interviewed some residents, and they confirmed that no life was lost to the floods.

“We activated NEMA, FCT Fire Service, Department of Development Control and Department of Engineering Services.”

Wenegieme pointed out that the houses immersed by the floods shown in viral video, were part of the 116 structures already marked for demolition in 2023. When Trademore Estate was declared a disaster zone.

The Acting DG stated that FCTA was prevented from removing the structures by a court injunction instituted by the association of residents of Trademore Estate.

She, however, lamented that a primary school with about 500 pupils, management, and staff is also sitting on the water channel in the Estate. She, therefore, described that as a disaster waiting to happen.

Wenegieme, therefore, appealed to residents in houses marked for demolition at Trademore Estate to relocate. She also advised the owners of the Estate to provide all needed infrastructure. This, she said, is to avert a reoccurrence of flash floods that may lead to loss of lives.
