As the power distribution worsen in the Southeast region of the country, the company responsible for the distribution of electricity in the region, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, has absolved itself of blames.

The DisCo made the clarification on Monday, May 6 when it said said the electricity supply challenges in the southeast is not the fault of EEDC.

Recall that most States in the Southeast region have been plunged into darkness for some months now due to power outages.

But responding to the complaints of customers in the region, EEDC said the region’s problem was caused by all players in the country’s electricity value chain. The main culprits, it said are the Transmission Company of Nigeria and Generation Companies.

While making the claim, the DisCo denied allegation of receiving N100 billion from he Anambra State Government.

EEDC, however, stated that the recent Memorandum of Understanding it signed with Anambra State was to boost efficient power supply within the State.

The DisCo also cleared the air on the insinuations that it was restricted by TCN to distribute power in the region due to N12 billion debt. Similarly, EEDC said the claim that TCN restricted it due to N12 billion debt is false.

“While describing the allegation as false, the DisCo stated that it will be unfair to blame EEDC for the power situation in the Southeast. It maintained that the situation was beyond its control.

Part of the statement read: “In response to the misinformation circulating on social media, we would like to clarify that there has been no transaction involving the payment of over 100 billion Naira to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) by the Anambra State government within the scope of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Any claims suggesting otherwise are false, mischievous, and deliberately intended to mislead the public.

“Similarly, assertions regarding the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) restricting EEDC’s access to its facilities due to an alleged debt of over 12 billion Naira, lacks merit. Such claims reflect a misunderstanding of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) operations and lack factual basis. We urge individuals to exercise discernment and refrain from lending credence to such unfounded allegations. Which serve only to mislead and distort the truth,” EEDC stated.

Recall that a pro-Biafra group, Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, had blamed EEDC for the epileptic power supply in the Southeast. The group, therefore, threatened to sack the DisCo from region if it remains unproductive.
